You know you are a Camp Nawaka Alumni when…… 1. Every sweatshirt you own is navy blue and emblazoned with NAWAKA 2. Even when dining alone, you stand before every meal and sing grace. 3. Your almost 30 and still considering going back to camp for one more summer. 4. There is a Merit Award hanging on the wall of your office…..but your diploma is buried in a box somewhere. 5. All the towels in your linen closet are folded in a triangle…just like the flag. 6. You can not fall asleep unless you can hear bullfrogs croaking. 7. The only ghost story you know is about Mordachi Jackson. 8. You live in a big city but save all your food scraps for the pig farmer. 9. You can finger spell the alphabet. 10. When help is needed, you jump in like an EAGER BEAVER CAMPER! Camp Nawaka and Camp Fire USA needs your help! There is no escaping the grim financial news that dominates the headlines. Everyone is cutting back…families, corporations and even foundations! As times get tight, financial support of non-profit organizations declines rapidly. Small non-profits are hurting and many can no longer deliver vital services. More than 100 kids were not able to attend one of Camp Fire's camps (Nawaka, Ponkawissett and Zoo Camp) this past summer…because of financial need. As more families are in need of campership aid, and basic operating costs are rising, the number of dollars donated decreases. Imagine what your life would be like if you had not been able to attend Camp Nawaka. While each camper gets something different from the Nawaka experience, the skills learned and the memories made last a lifetime. Perhaps you learned how to swim, to speak before a crowd, to sleep without a light, to build a one-match fire, or to live with others different from your family. Maybe you made lifelong friends, built beautiful memories, and grew to be a caring, confident adult leader. In ways large and small, the Camp Nawaka experience changed all of our lives. As a Nawaka Alumnus – you are and always will be an eager beaver camper! More than anyone else YOU can help ensure that Camp Fire USA continues to deliver quality programs to as many youth as possible. Please jump in and help. It is up to you! Keep summer with Camp Fire possible for a new generation of campers! If you have already donated money this year, please consider stretching and giving a little more. http://www.campfireusa-emass.org/howtohelp/ If you've never donated before, please give now. http://www.campfireusa-emass.org/howtohelp/ Every gift helps! • $30,000 will buy all the supplies to rebuild cabins #1 and #2. • $500 will buy a new canoe. • $100 will cover the costs of one campership. • $50 will gas up the camp van for a trip to Riverside. • $25 will buy a summer's worth of Council Fire candles. • $10 will buy 100 band aids and calamine lotion. Donating is easy – all it takes is a few quick mouse clicks. http://www.campfireusa-emass.org/howtohelp/ You can also mail checks to: Camp Fire USA Eastern Mass Council 56 Roland Street, North Lobby Boston, MA 02129 Your gift can be even LARGER. Thank to anonymous challenge, for every dollar donated by Nawaka Alumni before December 30, 2008, an additional dollar will be donated!!!! If you are not already getting e-mail directly from Camp Fire & Camp Nawaka, join the mailing list: http://www.campfireusa-emass.org/programs/nawaka/alumni.htm Please send a copy of this e-mail along to all of your Nawaka friends. We need to reach everyone! WoHeLo! Cynthia M. Donovan, Camp Nawaka Alumni (1978-91) & Board Member, Camp Fire USA Eastern Massachusetts Council Laura J. One of my favorite bloggers, Jim Sullivan over at Suldog (he reminds me of my cousin Michael) has several excellent posts up about the all too early jump retailers and other businesses get on endless Christmas promotions....you know the ones: radio stations that play Christmas music 24/7 starting in early November, stores that take down the Halloween decorations and put the Christmas stuff on October 20th etc. etc. Jim is encouraging everyone to remember that holidays should be celebrated one at a time.....and specifically that Thanksgiving celebrations should conclude prior to the commencement of the Christmas hype. Jim is encouraging all bloggers who agree to create a post titled "Thanksgiving Comes First"....a wee, little, homespun movement. Personally, I would be very happy if my world had an extra few weeks free from endless Dunkin Donuts posters and billboards featuring an orange skinned Rachael Ray hawking gift cards. If I get organized, I may have my Halloween decorations down by Thanksgiving. All the testing is over --- and now I get to choose. My terminal ilium/ ileoscal valve is very scarred and will only dialate between 2 and 4mm. (It should dilate to about 20mm). The rest of my large intestine (colon) and small intestine (ilium) look nice and healthy. No signs or infection or inflamation. My meds have all been adjusted and now I'm taking only 5 pills a day! (down from 15 a few weeks ago) But now I have to make a decision. I'd hoped to not need to make this decison until my 50's.....but..oh well. Do I want to try and have my valve streached using a baloon dilation method? This would be a one day, outpatient procedure. Recovery shouldn't be more than a day or so. If it works, I can expect the results to last for no more than 2 years. If it doesn't work I can still have the surgery. There is a 5% chance that the dialation would cause a perferation and I'd have to have the surgery right away. I will still need the surgery eventually. I could also just go ahead and have the surgery this spring. This would be major, inpatient surgery. Good, old, small bowel, resection. From what I've read, even if they manage to do the surgery laproscopicly, I'd still be in the hospital for 13+ days. A perfect result would leave me having no more blockage, and no more inflamation and no fresh, internal scarring. It is more likely that I'll get more internal scarring and need more surgey in 5+ years. And this is surgery -- so there will be external scar or scars and possible post surgical adhesions. I'd probably need significant recovery time at home as well. I'm not meeting with the surgeon until May 4 -- and then I need to follow up with my gastro doc. Until I do this I don't have all the facts and I'm doing independent research and speculation. If I have the baloon dilation they would do it on May 9. (They could do it earlier -- but I can't take any time off in April.) I've missed so much of 2007 already -- and my work and family life are both in the toilet. I don't have any more time left to be sick. Then again - a small part of me thinks that 2+ weeks in the hospital, hopped up on painkillers and not needing to do anything more complicated than eat jello and stumble to the bathroom sounds like an awesome vacation. Here you can see a video of an actual baloon dilation procedure....but it is not on the terminal illium ....its on some old dude's colostomy stoma. (I do not have and hopefully never will, have a colostomy) And here: is a paper about quality of life for patients undergoing this type of surgery. And here is an abstract for a journal article about long term results of the baloon dialtion procedures on my kind of scars. Here is another graphic slide show of an acutal person with Crohns disease symptons just like mine. Tags: balloon, choice, crohns, mgh, resection, scars, stenosis, suckage Fred feels: Freaked

And that it can be purchased by the case from Amazon.com? Some people think about Jello even more than I do!
